Anyone Can Be Great, Because Anyone Can Serve January 18, 2010 Winter is here! Imagine, someone comes to your house, bringing you a home delivered meal but can't get to your door safely because it's icy. And you're not able to keep your walk shovelled or sanded... Maybe you aren't able to deliver meals on weekdays, but you can help us assemble up to 500* sand shakers to be used by home delivered meals volunteers who serve through eight senior centers in Grafton County. Last year 851 elders who are homebound or unable to prepare their own meals received a total of 141,049 meals delivered by about 130 volunteers. (*If we have enough sand shakers, the extras will be made available to guests at the senior centers.) We will have two "sand shaker" projects on Monday January 18th - one in Lebanon NH and one in Haverhill NH. We will need help in the weeks before as we figure out logistics of sand, containers, etc. And we'll need help the day of. We'd like to have teams of adults and youth. We'll be working indoors. We'll take a break and have lunch together, and learn a bit more about Dr. King, as well as elders and food insecurity, resources available - including local food pantries, and the United We Serve: Feed A Neighbor initiative. We're just beginning to put this together, and hope it will be a fun and interesting time getting something done, meeting other folks, and helping other volunteers. There will also be an opportunity in the following weeks to "ride along" with home delivered meals volunteers at noon time, so you can meet the volunteers and elders you're helping, and see how a little sand can go a long way to helping someone!
