  • improve chances for offenders re-entering the community: teach inmates decision making using a structured curriculum. Thresholds & Decisions training for volunteers October 27, 2007.
  • improve people's access to health care: drive them to appointments or lead exercise classes, (see If It Ain't Broke, Why Fix It?)
  • enhance public safety: inform the community about disaster preparedness, staff a hot-line, or conduct community patrols
  • bridge the communication gap: teach the internet to new "surfers" of all ages, or read aloud on tape for those with impaired vision
  • encourage enthusiasm for learning: be a home-work helper at an after-school program, read with Head Start students, or tutor adults
